After a year of work, The Examiner has moved its highly popular news site to a new a platform - built on Drupal.
At Drupalcon Paris, last year, it was announced that the company had acquired NowPublic - a small but fast-growing citizen journalism site - and the reason seemed to be mainly to acquire their Drupal expertise. Now we see the results of that in action.
They’ve had a live preview of the site running recently, but today the main site has switched to Drupal.
Of interest to the community will be the fact that it has launched on the yet-to-be-released Drupal 7. Angie Byron (webchick), the core maintainer for D7 said:
This project has really tested the boundaries of Drupal 7, and it’s going to be of huge benefit to the larger community. It’s SO awesome to see our baby out there serving one of the highest-traffic sites.
In the picture on the right you can see their Denver-based dev team just after the launch, celebrating with champagne and a short speech. They seem to be gathered in quite a cramped meeting room, with a temporary setup - and a lot of coffee at the back of the room!
All seems to have gone smoothly as Károly Négyesi (chx), who’s on the NowPublic development team, says the hardest part of the transition was “Staying awake”!

We recently made the switch as well to host our patio heaters blog, so that we could have more control over products, especially the dimplex fireplaces products that we were having trouble with.

Don’t break out the champagne just yet: Examiner’s switch to Drupal has, in the short term at least, been an unmitigated disaster, with content migration problems, drastically reduced pageviews site-wide, and HUGE steps back in user experience for both visitors to the site and the site’s content creators, who have now lost the ability to use even simple html in their work. Drupal fans should NOT be celebrating the Examiner connection. Not yet, anyway.

I’d love to see some follow-up posts on this! Examiner’s Drupal rollout has been a catastrophe by almost any measure. What were they thinking? The Drupal community should either rally behind Examiner now and try to save it, ASAP, or start distancing themselves as far as possible from this project.

We actually have had more than 62,000 total Examiners contribute on our site since we launched in 2008; we still actively communicate with more than 55,000, which is what that number is based on. Currently we have an average of about 60 percent that have actively contributed in the past 90 days. We use that time frame in monitoring engagement to take into account our daily publishing frequency is always fluctuating – as some titles like sports are seasonal, others like music are dependent upon new information or movement, for example.
